About IWC

International Woodfire Ceramics (IWC) is the outgrowth of my experiences with several international woodfire ceramics workshops from 2002 to 2006. Through these events I became aware of the variety and quality of woodfired ceramic work from around the world, and in particular from artists who are regionally known but perhaps not yet well-known on the international stage. This web site was created to help make connections between the buying public and these artists using wood as the fuel to fire their work, with its attendant effects on the glaze and clay.

Many professional ceramists do not yet have a web presence, and even those that do, generally do not have the budget to allow for traditional media advertising. IWC advertises in several of the major ceramics and art magazines to generate more publicity for the art of woodfired ceramics as well as the individual practitioners. IWC is supported by donations and does not take any part of sales generated from the web site.

There are a number of web sites that are geared toward the sharing of information about the practice and concerns related to woodfiring, but IWC exists primarily to share the work and thoughts of each individual artist. For those people that become interested in a more in depth look at the field of woodfired ceramics, please see the appropriate URLs on the links page.

There is a renaissance ongoing in the world of woodfired ceramics and this web site only shares a portion of it. As time goes by, it is hoped that artists from countries not yet represented will be added, as well as a more complete listing of professional woodfiring ceramists for already listed countries.

In the end, the production of this beautiful work will only have long term health when it is well supported by collectors and others that enjoy this art form that connects the modern world with the roots of human technology.

Enjoy!
James Kasper
